There's a great little piece this week in Silentology about the strained friendship between Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford, and how Douglas Fairbanks kept them together.

At his peak, Chaplin was Hollywood's highest-paid actor, and Mary Pickford came in second. But the two were so very different that they may have never collaborated on United Artists were it not for Douglas Fairbanks, Pickford's husband and Chaplin's best friend.
